our arctic adventure

arctic adventure
We have been judged with a critical eye by some cruisers lately. Will we be putting our kids in unnecessary danger? Are they too young to really appreciate the adventure? Is your boat strong enough?

NO

NO

YES

Northwest_passage

In the summer of 2015 we plan to attempt the Northwest Passage, if you aren’t too sure what this is that’s ok because I really didn’t have a clue until a year ago. The NW Passage is the sea route through the Arctic Ocean. Yes we are talking about freezing temperatures, polar bears and icebergs big enough to sink the Titanic…again. But what we’re really talking about is stunning, untouched landscapes. Wildlife that is both fragile and robust. And the people, fighting to survive each year through the dark unforgiving winters and the short magical summers.
Even though our kids are young and probably won’t be able to remember the voyage we believe that they are at the perfect age to build confidence, appreciate nature and the importance of team work. Its in these young ages that they learn to respect their elders, learn that their role in the family is just as important as mine or Carl’s. Living on the boat and experiencing different cultures at such a early age, its what dreams are made of. They may not catch that big yellow bus to school everyday but they will be receiving the best education that I could ever want for them. I want to teach them not to take life for granted. Learn useful skills, work the land, rejoice in the sunshine. I want to allow them to breathe in the beauty of nature, not just the dust from books. So honestly tell me now are we endangering our kids or strengthening them from the inside out?
If you check out our boat page above you will see that SV Salty is a TANK! She’s a steel 65’ Bruce Roberts sailboat. She has twin engines to power us through the toughest situations. We are different from any other boat that has attempted the passage, we have young children on board. Cruising with kids is not sailing the world selfishly dragging our kids kicking and screaming behind us, it’s a lifestyle choice. Some days are spectacular, some days are ordinary and some plain out wretched. We won’t be taking any unnecessary risks that we would if we were traveling by ourselves, if the ice doesn’t break up as planned we will not push our luck because the threat of being iced in is very real. As always we watch the weather and sail only in fair conditions, that said the weather up north can get unpredictable.
We will be spending the spring tweaking her for the run north. We have been busying ourselves researching heaters, gear and communication equipment. But it’s always those little things that are the most troubling – how much flour should I really carry? Making sure that we will have enough food for the adventure is a daunting task. Can I really eat dried meat? Baked beans, we need LOADS of baked beans.
So if you know of any clothing outfitters, survival gear company’s or bulk baked bean producers give them our email we would love to test drive your product in the most grueling conditions possible

almost cook-able

Thanks to many horrible hours working with wood Carl got the range in place. He HATES carpentry with a passion and prefers to weld – lucky we have a steel boat and not a wood one.

The original stove was one straight out of a house, huge, useless and no oven! All the hours learning how to make bread from scratch is not going down the drain. Tomorrow a guy should be coming around to see if he can put in some stainless steel to encase the box it goes in. I think we’re also going to border it with stainless steel to hide the fact the hole was bigger than our Dickinson Marine Mediterranean stove. Can’t wait to cook something – who ever thought I’d be saying that.

Carl is out now with the girls (oh the peace, catching up on our business billing and payroll) looking for propane hose to get this bad boy powered up! Maybe spaghetti bolognaise for dinner tonight!!

But until then I have a mound of paperwork for our not so closed business, need to get Prili on ebay. It’s been raining here for the past few days and our laundry is in a huge festering nest in the forward cabin. But got my hand wringer in the mail yesterday so hopefully the rain holds off and I’ll get a couple of bucket loads washed today. Busy busy bee. People ask “what are you going to do all day on a sailboat?” Ummm hello “FIX IT and survive”

Here are some other pictures I found on Carl’s ipad. Check out the space! She needs some love and girly touch but we could swing a horse in her.

putting her back together

IMG_1805[1]Tomorrow Carl plans on leaving out for Louisiana so we can haul her out to complete the paint job. You can pretty much see yourself in her reflection! Finishing up putting on her cleats and blocks so she can be tied up at the dock. When she comes back from Louisiana we’ll then put the masts back on with the brand new rigging. She won’t be so naked anymore.

The fridge isn’t turned on in the picture but it works brilliantly. It was crazy how much better it worked with the new vents under Pri’s bed. Night and day.

Mike installed our new custom sink in the aft cabin, marvelous. We had planned for the bathroom to be our hanging locker for foul weather gear and lifejackets but it also has a working shower and loo.

We converted the hanging locker next to the nav station into a pantry for dry goods. It was a waste of space set up as a hanging locker, all our gear would have gone moldy within a week stuffed in there. IMG_1804[1]IMG_1807[1]IMG_1808[1]IMG_1809[1]IMG_1811[1]IMG_1810[1]IMG_1813[1]

coming along

August 21, 2013 by Carly Filed Under: Galley/Cooking, Kids, Refit

Slowly she’s coming along. The interior trim has been scuffed up and ready to varnish. The stove is in and doesn’t look so “easy bake oven” anymore. The new sink for the master and counter around the galley sink have also been installed and they are AWSOME!

Best of all the girls LOVE their rooms and can’t wait to move on. Pri said she didn’t even need a mattress, just a blanket. For some reason little wags was more excited over the head then anything.

Sorry about the sideways videos, I haven’t put our video editing software on the laptop yet – and who knows where it is in this mess of a house, we move out tomorrow. Just crook your head and enjoy 🙂

Also got a few bubba things in the mail via amazon, love you amazon! This is the bumper bed that will be in the upper sea berth in the salon, it’s going to work perfectly to stop a bubba from squirming around. Not to worry we are also going to make a lee cloth so he/she will be 100% contained.

video update

Here’s a quick video of our interior and some exterior. The interior is in the middle of getting painted.

smallest range on earth

February 18, 2013 by Carly Filed Under: Galley/Cooking, Refit

We have happily spent a fortune on a fancy easy bake oven! I knew it was going to be small but now I’m questioning my measuring skills.
My new ENO Gascogne 3 burner oven came today, shipped direct from Canada. And it is bloody tiny! My lovely Le Cruset pot isn’t going to work. Bugga, bugga, bugga.
But no biggy, I will make it work. Can’t wait to cook up some magic.
Bitterly windy and cold out today so don’t think I’ll brave it to take some pictures yet.
