smallest range on earth

February 18, 2013 by Carly Filed Under: Galley/Cooking, Refit

We have happily spent a fortune on a fancy easy bake oven! I knew it was going to be small but now I’m questioning my measuring skills.
My new ENO Gascogne 3 burner oven came today, shipped direct from Canada. And it is bloody tiny! My lovely Le Cruset pot isn’t going to work. Bugga, bugga, bugga.
But no biggy, I will make it work. Can’t wait to cook up some magic.
Bitterly windy and cold out today so don’t think I’ll brave it to take some pictures yet.

bow and bulkhead

February 11, 2013 by Carly Filed Under: Kids, Refit

The bulkhead between the anchor locker and master is done. We’re going to put in a small access door between them both. We took out the old sliding hatch into the anchor locker and replaced it with a stronger water tight one that looks great and also takes up less room on the deck.
Carl is working on a contraption for the bow, he showed me but honestly I have no idea what it does. Involves the anchor in some way.
We brought in our custom table, once the bulkhead was in place we couldn’t fit it in through the entrance hatch. If someone scratches it, there will be hell to pay!
New hatches into the engine room via the cockpit have been installed. They look really hot! The old teak ones were all rotted away and it was cheaper to go this route then replacing the teak.
The girls love going to the boat even tho they hate that the flooring is still up. We hung out under the tarp for a while out of the wind.
We have the “glass” in for the dodger so I can’t wait for Carl to install it.
The side windows are leaking a bunch so we’ll have to get those bedded in first.

above: girls are slowly getting used to getting in and out.

above: can’t seem to rotate our pictures on blogger. Crook your head to the left and you’ll see the chain plates.

Still need to have the tarp on top of the dodger because the hatch hasn’t been bedded down yet. Girls making their mark on the boat with some pencils.

my albino

January 24, 2013 by Carly Filed Under: Refit

Not a lot of action on the boat. Still fiberglassing  Going nowhere FAST! Took some video’s of the boat and up loading them via youtube so I’ll post those soon.

Above is my bloody hot sink. I don’t know why people install sinks that have no depth. I’ll get Carl to make a cutting board that fits over the top of the outboard one. Not too sure if I’m going to request plastic or wood yet. Would prefer wood but plastic is easier to clean. Plastic is more toxic but wood more porous. Bahhh!
Check back later for my videos.

dodger love

January 2, 2013 by Carly Filed Under: Refit

Happy New Year to all!
We spent the day taking down sails, something we should have done months ago! We were surprised how easy it was. We were very optimistic that it would all fit in the back of my car with life jackets and 100 egg cartons. HA! We stacked them on top of the volvo and they are currently in the shop at our work. We’ll have to get them home with a trailer. Going to turn the apartment above our garage in our own personal sail loft. Nice.
I’ll have to pull out the book I bought of mending sails because I am clueless.

Last week was very eventful. We got our shit hot dodger on. She still needs to be glassed on the boat but she’s sturdily held with putty. We think it looks great. We weren’t to sure if it would look bulky and stick out like a sore thumb but once we slap some paint on you would think it was original! Going to make a canvas covering for the top in rainy/ rough weather to protect the entrance way but no more slamming our heads on the dodger!! Hopefully I can find a youtube video on how to pull that one off.
We are lucky enough to have a friend that loves gadgets so we’ll be able to cut the widows out ourselves. He is also making up a custom table top for the salon. Thanks Mike!

“hey baby, listy listy no more…”

December 17, 2012 by Carly Filed Under: Refit

We had always wondered why our boat had a port list. We had taken out all the large components – tanks, engine, generator etc. So we were starting to get a little worried. Until……

We discovered a galley cupboard full of what we think is lead. What the hell!! That’s some good can storage!! So one by one we removed all the “lead” plates and voila! “listy listy no more!”

Really? You think they could have at least put clean stuff on the boat. We’re thinking the generator in the engine room (starboard) put the boat out of wack. Bloody heavy stuff!

So the good ‘ole oven got the boot. I swear the thing must be an original that came with the boat in 1981. The previous owner told me the back burner no longer worked and she couldn’t remember what each knob was for, the gimbal only half worked and that she only cooked with a crockpot. Hmmm TOSS IT!

Would love a Dickinson but can’t seem to make the beast fit. The hole fits a Force 10 compact stove perfectly but I’m still trying to talk Carl into gaining me 2″ by eating into the cupboard below the cutout. Still a work in progress. There’s no way I can cook with a compact size oven. Sailboat ovens as they are now are way too small for standard pans. Here’s our hole.

Can’t mount the new oven higher than the bench because the upper cabinets will catch on fire and the stove won’t gimbal properly. Don’t think it would be a huge ordeal to gain 2″ below. The upper left cabinet is where we found all that extra lead…. lucky us! Why couldn’t it have been gold, or beer?

Me after washing my hands in the bayou. No running water down at the boat so have to do our best.

Bit more grinding to do before we are ready to paint. 🙂 Horray! Need to fit a good size bed, shower, head and basin in this area. It’s the “love shack”

Everything is so rough. There are tools everywhere and I’m sick of having to walk in the bilges to get places. I can’t wait to see some “pretty” progress. We haven’t installed our main hatch yet so the entrance is securely covered with a stylish tarp, anchored with scrap wood.
