As cruisers you always worry about how expensive things will be at your next destination. Is it really worth going there if it’s going to take Jaws size chunks out of the cruising kitty? So is Greenland good cruising grounds for a budget conscious cruiser? Probably not, but it isn’t as crazy expensive as you would think.
Compared to American:
The produce I would say is probably double but I find it tastier. All the fruits and vege are fresh and of proper size. Like in any supermarket whatever is in season is cheaper. Greenland is pretty much a huge rock and I doubt they grow any produce. I saw that the pears were from South Africa and as for the others I’m not sure.
Nuuk had a great selection of meats from chicken, beef, seal to whale and some other stuff that I have no clue what it was. I almost bought a pound of left over meats that they cut out of everything from the supermarket in Nuuk, I thought it was Musk Ox until a local kindly told me to stay away from it. Outside they sell shrimp and eggs (from a large white bird is all we could understand – it was no chicken egg) . You will also find fish, seal and whale right off the dock down at the harbour.
We saw a big difference in the alcohol. The beer has a lower alcohol content and is far more expensive. For a cask of wine (3L) you will pay $60 and a single bottle of Carlsberg beer (warm) is around $4. Restaurants don’t sell alcohol but you can find it in some bars.
Here are some prices I took note of:
1 Krone = .15 USD
1 Krone = .20 AUD
Krone | US Dollar | Australian Dollar | |
diesel (fuel dock)/L | 6.2 | $0.93 | $1.24 |
redbull | 25 | $3.75 | $5.00 |
broccoli (froz bag) | 25 | $3.75 | $5.00 |
salami | 30 | $4.50 | $6.00 |
tomatoes | 4.5 | $0.67 | $0.90 |
pears 8 pack | 35 | $5.25 | $7.00 |
UHT milk (1L) | 7.5 | $1.25 | $$15.00 |
banana cake | 45 | $6.75 | $9.00 |
rifle (polar bear size) | 10,000 | $1,500.00 | $2,000.00 |
bus (Nuuk) | 15 | $2.25 | $3.00 |
beer (warm at a bar) | 40 | $6.00 | $8.00 |
We have found their fresh pastries to be divine and of a good price. At local restaurants you pretty much find burgers, hot dogs, fries, ribs (not pork) and fried rice. Majority of locals seem to like either hot dogs or a huge plate of fries for lunch.
Michelle and I went to Chilis in Nuuk for dinner one night. I got a cheese burger, fries and coke for 93 krone/ $13.95USD / $18.60USD. You will need to request ice if you don’t want to drink room temperature coke. We also had ice cream. Two scoops in a cup is 25 krone / $3.75USD / $5.00AUD, it’s more on the sorbet side than ice cream but delish. Make sure you try some Guf on your ice cream. It’s the consistency of whipped cream but pink and very sweet.
