We first fell in love with this steel beauty a few months ago when we starting looking for a new home. She was wonderful and everything we were looking for. Strong, beamy and perfect for family living. We flew down to see her a few times before we put in an offer that of course got rejected but what first offer doesn’t!
We finally got her under contract and first thing was first. What was her name? She was just too stout to have a prissy girly name so we declared that she was the perfect Bruce.
We hired a rather expensive surveyor to check out her hull – we knew everything else didn’t work. Unfortunately we discovered Bruce was corroding from the inside out but the worst thing was it was where her concrete ballast was poured. We would have to cut the bottom off of Bruce and start again. Bruce wasn’t meant to be. Our love was lost. Destined for an owner with bottomless pockets.
Our first love….. Bruce
We had to walk away. We later drowned our sorrows in beer and vodka.
I am loving catching up with your blog and when I saw this I had to say I feel your pain. We walked away from a beautiful Sparkman and Stevens wooden boat with a fiberglass overlay on the hull. Man, our hearts just loved that boat. Here are my blog posts about our roller coaster ride through those emotional times. http://littlecunningplan.com/2013/04/diagnosis-crazy-pants/ first,
then http://littlecunningplan.com/2013/04/rigging-check-testsail-check-survey/ and finally, http://littlecunningplan.com/2013/04/only-love-can-break-your-heart/. That boat just resonated with me. But I love your Skye 51! What a beauty and how nice to have the skills to just take her down to the hull like you are doing. I wish we could do that with Andromeda. Maybe if we were 25 years younger!
