Siorapaluk has a population of 40 people, all hunters and the kids – probably hunters in training. On the day we visited people were off across the bay hunting birds and further down the coast after seal. The town, if you can call it that, has a post office and small store, both which were closed when we were there. We met one local man feeding the husky’s and a family visiting their parents, all were extremely friendly and actually had good English. This was the first time we saw yellow sand, I wish we could have enjoyed it but it was blowing 20kts and was bloody cold. We walked around a bit and the kids got to play with other local kids.
Big stands were built everywhere that had all the dead carcuses on them. I saw seal, musk ox and even polar bear skins. I’m not too sure why they keep it all up hight, maybe because it winter the snow gets high or incase some of the dogs get loose and they don’t raid the flesh. It was a pretty stinky adventure.
This is the gang we’ve been hanging out with. Snow Dragon II and Bagheera, both will be attempting the Northwest Passage.
Siorapaluk has to be one of my favorite towns, it was clean, they were good to their dogs and the people were extremely friendly.

I am an avid fan of folks who have moved to the boat to spend some time exploring…exploring life afloat, children afloat, & many different places.
Another family oriented blog is Log of s/v Del Viento. Well worth viewing.
